The Orthodox wedding service consists of two parts: the Betrothal (exchange of rings) and the Crowning (placement of crowns on the couple's heads). The crowns symbolize both the glory and martyrdom of marriage, as well as the couple's status as king and queen of their domestic church. The couple drinks from the common cup and processes around the analogion three times. Marriage is understood as an icon of Christ's union with the Church.

The evening prayer service of the Orthodox Church, traditionally celebrated at sunset. Vespers includes psalms, hymns, scripture readings, and incense. On Saturday evenings, Great Vespers is often combined with the Sunday Divine Liturgy. The service marks the end of the liturgical day and prepares the faithful for rest and reflection.

A devotional service of praise consisting of hymns sung while standing ("akathist" means "not sitting"). The most famous is the Akathist to the Theotokos, traditionally sung during the fifth Friday of Great Lent. Akathists can honor Christ, the Theotokos, or various saints. The ceremonial procession of the Holy Cross on August 1st, traditionally marking the beginning of the Dormition Fast. This feast involves carrying the Cross in procession for veneration and blessing. It serves as spiritual preparation for the Dormition feast and emphasizes the Cross as our protection and source of strength.

The sacrament of reconciliation through which the faithful confess their sins to a priest and receive absolution. Also called the sacrament of repentance or penance, confession restores the baptismal purity lost through sin and reconciles the penitent with God and the Church. The penitent stands before an icon of Christ while confessing to the priest, who acts as a witness and minister of God's forgiveness. The priest then covers the penitent's head with his epitrachelion (stole) and pronounces the prayer of absolution.

The first Christian martyr, one of the seven deacons chosen by the apostles. Celebrated on December 27th, Stephen was stoned to death after giving a powerful speech about Christ's fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. His prayer for his persecutors' forgiveness echoes Christ's own words and inspired many conversions, including Paul's.

The revelation of Christ's divine glory to Peter, James, and John on Mount Tabor. Christ appeared in brilliant light alongside Moses and Elijah, and the Father's voice proclaimed "This is My beloved Son." Grapes and other fruits are traditionally blessed on this feast, celebrated on August 6th.

The sacrament of initiation into the Orthodox Church, through which a person is united with Christ in His death and resurrection. The baptismal candidate is immersed three times in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, dying to sin and rising to new life in Christ. Baptism cleanses from original sin, grants adoption as God's child, and makes the person a member of the Body of Christ. In Orthodox practice, baptism is immediately followed by chrismation and first communion.

The sacrament of sealing with the Holy Spirit, administered immediately after baptism in the Orthodox Church. The priest anoints the newly baptized with holy chrism (myrrh) on the forehead, eyes, nostrils, ears, lips, chest, hands, and feet, saying "The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit." This sacrament completes baptism and grants the fullness of the Holy Spirit, enabling the person to participate fully in the life of the Church. It corresponds to the Western sacrament of Confirmation but is given to infants.

The Russian monk who brought Orthodoxy to Alaska and was the first Orthodox saint canonized in America. Celebrated on December 13th, Herman arrived in Alaska in 1794 and spent over 40 years ministering to native Alaskans. He defended them against exploitation and established schools and orphanages on Spruce Island.

The 18th-century bishop known for his spiritual writings and pastoral care. Celebrated on August 13th, Tikhon retired early from episcopal duties to focus on prayer and writing. His works on Christian living influenced many, including St. Theophan the Recluse. He represents the combination of episcopal responsibility with monastic spirituality and theological reflection.

The "falling asleep" and assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. Preceded by a two-week fast, this feast on August 15th celebrates Mary's death and her bodily assumption. Orthodox theology teaches that Mary experienced death but was immediately raised and taken to heaven, where she intercedes for all Christians.

The sacrament of healing for physical and spiritual ailments, administered by anointing with blessed oil. Also called the sacrament of anointing or Euchelaion, this service is traditionally celebrated by seven priests (though one may serve) who read seven Gospel passages and anoint the person seven times on the forehead, nostrils, cheeks, lips, chest, and hands. Holy Unction is offered not only to the dying but to all who are sick in body or soul, and many parishes celebrate it communally during Great Lent. The service emphasizes God's healing power and mercy.

The miraculous image of Christ that appeared on cloth, also called the Mandylion. Celebrated on August 16th, this icon was sent by Christ himself to King Abgar of Edessa. According to tradition, Christ pressed a cloth to his face, leaving his image imprinted. This acheiropoietos (not-made-by-hands) icon represents Christ's divine nature and the power of his image.

The martyrdom of St. John the Baptist by order of Herod Antipas, who had imprisoned John for condemning his unlawful marriage. This solemn feast on August 29th is observed with strict fasting. John's courage in speaking truth to power and his martyrdom make him a model for Christian witness and moral integrity.

The beginning of the Orthodox liturgical year on September 1st. Also called the Indiction, this feast marks the start of the annual cycle of feasts and fasts. Many Orthodox churches hold special services with prayers for the new year, blessing of schools, and remembrance of God's creation. It emphasizes new beginnings and spiritual renewal.
